Sydney North - October News

Well, this is a bit old news but nonetheless...

October 18th we had our annual mini field of women themed night to celebrate all the women that have touched our lives.

November 8th is our end of year/christmas celebration party at 6.30pm.  Please go to the contact page and give us a call if you've forgotten the address.  We're doing a Christmas decoration Kris Kringle so bring along a decoration (up to $15 in value).  Also, bring along your preferred drink and favourite plate of food to share.

Septmebers meeting was a lively planning meeting and thank you everyone for all the ideas for speakers for 2011! (now all we have to do is contact everyone suggested to see if they are happy to come and talk to us then fit them into our next years calendar…easy!) It was also great to catch up with what everyone was doing and how we are all travelling along on each of our journeys.

Finally after discussion and agreement by all our coffee and chat day has been changed to the first FRIDAY of the month AT 11AM at Curl Curl Kiosk.  Having said that, there will be no get together now until sometime in the new year.  TBA.

Hope all of you have a lovely summer and Christmas break and see you on February 21st 2011 when our regular monthly meetings will recommence.

Sydney North - September News

UPCOMING MEETINGS & GUEST SPEAKERS…

20th September – Still working on it!!! (Yes I know we’re cutting it fine just think of it as a magical mystery meeting)

18th October – Mini Field of Women at the RSL

November – Christmas Celebration - Date and Place still to be determined!

OUR THANKS GO TO…
Sharlaine and Jill from the Body Shop who came along and talked to us about the body shop and it’s philosophy and their products. How sell sustainable and fair trade products, are environmentally active. It was very interesting to hear about all the different things they do for the community like coming to talk to us, taking part in sponsored walks for various charities. We also got a very nice hand massage using a very yummy hand cream called ‘Africa Spa’. So all in all a very enjoyable evening was had by all.

We’ve been asked by several people if it would be possible to change the coffee & chat, time and day to a Friday at 11am. If anyone has any objections please let us know as soon as possible, if no objections then we will change it, but don’t worry I’ll let you all know in good time about any changes.

The following email was sent to me by wonderful Sally D who has gone to the UK to see her family, flying Business to Hong Kong and then First Class to London no less!! (Thanks to her brothers frequent flyer points).
I’m not sure when she will be back she thought all going well with her health she’d be away for a month.

“Hi Jane, in my search for travel insurance I found the following insurer who does insure certain cancers, unfortunately not mine. Cover- Moore - www.covermore.com.au the clause was for "breast/prostate/kidney/bowel/colon - If you were diagnosed over 6 months ago, have not had any chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the last six months, your cancer has not spread beyond the primary site at any time and your journey is less than 6 months.  In respect of prostate cancer you must also have a psa of 10 or less." (Not that the last sentence is relevant immediately to us.  Someone might have a husband or partner who wants to travel.)

And if you are not sure you can go on to the web and filling out pre existing condition and they assess you.  The more I went into the questionnaire I thought "Jesus, I wouldn't insure myself in a pink fit".
So in the end I didn't send it, especially after reading the above again. But I thought it could go in the newsletter.”

While on the subject of travel I found this information, if any of you need to travel with needles and medication like I will in Nov when I go to the UK. It is important to confirm the actual temperature range that your particular meds can be kept at, and for how long. Best person is your Dr, you can also get valuable info from Travel Clinics Aust at www.travelclinic.com.au  If you need to keep the meds cool or just safe if temp is not an issue then a cooler container is apparently available from Diabetes Australia who have good thermo seal-type containers so check out  www.diabetesaustralia.com.au  Also it is a very good idea to contact the airline you are flying with to find out if they have any particular restrictions or requirements i.e. documents demonstrating your need for the meds/needles and always declare everything at the security screening point.

Treasure  this day, and treasure yourself.
Truly, neither will ever happen again .   Ray Bradbury

OUR THANKS GO TO…

Debbie Rayfield – our speaker from last month – who comes originally from the UK where she was a nurse for many years, she then became interested in and studied Homeopathy. When she moved to Australia she found that unlike the UK, where they have both traditional and complimentary therapies used in tandem in a many of the hospitals, Australia was lacking. So she started first The Fountain Centre and then more recently Life Spring. Thank you so much Debbie for such an eye opening talk.

‘The Fountain Centre’ is a group of dedicated therapists that use Complementary Therapy to help in the care of people with Cancer or other life changing illnesses. Some of the therapies that can be found at the Fountain Centre are Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Reiki, Relaxation & Meditation, Massage & Shiatsu, Holistic Counselling, Homeopathy, Nutrition, Herbalism, Kinesiology.

‘Life Spring palliative care’ is a charitable service for patients with chronic or life threatening illness, their families and carers. The practitioners can treat you at the clinic in Balgowlah or visit you at home, or in hospital. ‘Life Spring’ practitioners work on a voluntary basis. They only charge is for medicines, or nutritional supplements if needed. But donations are always very welcome to help them keep this amazing and generous work going. www.fountaincentre.com.au or www.life-spring.org.au phone 9907 6108

Thoughts for the day…

The helping hands you’re going to need in life are located at the end of your arms PUT yourself into your own hands. Everybody has two. You can use them to get a hand-out, sit on them and do nothing, or you can use them to get a serious grip on yourself.

But when you’ve put yourself in your own good hands, don’t forget to give yourself an occasional pat on the back.

Say, ‘Well done, pussycat, you’re doing ok!’ - Bryce Courtenay (A recipe for dreaming)

It’s never too late to… be a mentor
It’s a two-way street.

You pass on your hard won skills and wisdom;

You receive insight and friendship.

You’re a conduit for knowledge.

You ease the path.

In return, you’ll see life through different eyes,

And you’ll learn more than you teach.

Experience is what you get while you’re looking for something else. - Federico Fellini
Little Fire fighter
A fire fighter was working on the engine outside the Station, when he noticed a little girl nearby in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the sides and a garden hose tightly coiled in the middle.

The girl was wearing a fire fighter’s helmet. The wagon was being pulled by her dog and her cat. The fire fighter walked over to take a closer look. 'That sure is a nice fire truck,' the fire fighter said with admiration.

'Thanks,' the girl replied. The fire fighter looked a little closer. The girl had tied the wagon to her dog's collar and to the cat's testicles. 'Little partner,' the fire fighter said, 'I don't want to tell you how to run your rig, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar, I think you could go faster. '

The little girl replied thoughtfully, 'You're probably right, but then I wouldn't have a siren.'
